THE LAUNCH 2026

Lunenburg Doc Fest's Documentary Pitch Contest

FAQs

Can I apply if I don’t have filmmaking experience?

Yes! While filmmaking experience is an asset, it’s not required. In your application, highlight any relevant experience – especially in areas like budgeting, project coordination, people management, or storytelling. Let us know what skills you bring to the table, how you plan to manage the project, and who you intend to collaborate with in roles like directing, producing, or editing.

Can I apply with another member of my team?

No. Only five individual participants will be selected. We do not accept joint applications or co-pitchers. However, your project may involve collaborators – just note that only one person will be selected to represent the project and participate in The Launch.

Can I still apply to The Launch if I’m applying for other grants or funding for the same film?

Yes! The Launch is a non-exclusive opportunity. You’re welcome to pursue other funding. If selected as winner, your project must be completed and submitted to Lunenburg Doc Fest by July 31, 2027.

What kind of in-kind services are included in the pitch prize?

In-kind services for 2026 are still being confirmed. In past editions, prizes have included:

  • Equipment rentals

  • Post-production services

  • Professional consultations

  • Festival access and more!

Stay up to date via our Prize Package page here.

Any tips for making my application stand out to the selection committee?

  • Show your dedication to media creation, especially documentary storytelling.

  • Be clear about where you are in your project’s development.

  • Focus your application on one strong, compelling idea that’s ready for the pitch stage.

  • Demonstrate that your project is realistic to complete — i.e., consider the costs and logistics of travel, access, music rights, and archival materials.

  • Most importantly: tell us why you are the right person to tell this story, and why this story matters now.

How much time commitment is required?

Participants are expected to attend:

  • Two 60-minute online workshops in September (see schedule here)

  • The tech rehearsal & live pitch and screening event at Lunenburg Doc Fest on the morning of September 26, 2026 (in person).

What is the cost of the program?

It’s free to apply and participate. Travel is not covered, but accommodation support for the night of September 26 is available.

How long will I have to make the film if I win?

If selected as the winner, you’ll have nine months to complete your film with a final submission deadline of July 31, 2027.
