A Celebration of Girlhood & Girl Guide Cookies Kicks Off the Outdoor Movie Series, Docs on the Dock
Aug 19, 2026

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lunenburg, N.S., August 19, 2026 - Guess what?! It’s Girl Guide cookie season - and time for Docs on the Dock! Lunenburg Doc Fest is happy to present Cookie Queens as the kick off screening for the four-documentary, four-week outdoor movie series, Docs on the Dock. Running weekly on Sunday nights from August 30 to September 20, Atlantic Canada’s leading documentary festival brings a curated selection of award winning films to Zwicker Wharf in Lunenburg, N.S.
“Our programmers have selected four great films this year,” says Walter Forsyth, Festival Director of the Lunenburg Doc Fest. “The outdoor movie experience is a memory you will share like drive-ins and camp fires. Audiences describe it as magical. Cookie Queens is a family- friendly way to kick off the series.”
The Docs on the Dock 2026 has been running for five years, acting as a lead up to the Lunenburg Doc Fest, taking place this year on September 23-27, 2026. The feature-length screenings are free, begin at sunset, and are chosen with Lunenburg locals, day-trippers, and tourists in mind.
This year’s Docs on the Dock schedule:
August 30 - Cookie Queens follows four main girls who are as sweet as the cookies, but the film also challenges us to consider capitalism and how we indoctrinate the next generation into this flawed system.
September 6 - The Oldest Person in the World is a decade-long global journey chronicling the ever-changing record holders of the title of oldest person alive. What begins as a portrait of longevity becomes a meditation on time, fate, and the joy of being alive.
September 13 - Time and Water shares Icelandic poet and author Andri Snær Magnason’s construction of a time capsule to honour the glacial ice of his homeland. The documentary is a universal reflection on the power of home and being alive amid profound epochal change.
September 20 - The Oldham Man and the Sea documents 70 year-old Frank’s rowing across the Atlantic Ocean alone in a small rowing boat. He sets out to break a world record and quietly defy everything society expects of age, sense, and self-preservation.
“Docs on the Dock is a wonderful communal experience and an inviting introduction to the art of documentary filmmaking,” says Forsyth. “It gives young and new filmgoers the chance to discover the powerful connection that comes from a well-told story about real people, real lives and real events.”
Audiences are encouraged to come early to enjoy the sunset on the Lunenburg harbour and to bring their own camping chairs and a warm blanket for maximum comfort. A bag of free popcorn comes with the experience, and this year a snack bar will be open, too. The films are free to see, or audience members can follow a pay-what-you-can model.
Docs on the Dock 2026 is supported by Build Nova Scotia, Canadian Heritage, Lunenburg Board of Trade, Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Communities, Culture, and Heritage, Star Power Atlantic, Telefilm Canada, Bay Ferries Ltd., the Town of Bridgewater, and the Town of Lunenburg.
